Jo Hawley was born in England and grew up in New Zealand. She lived in London for several years, returning to New Zealand to study art history and English literature before moving to Melbourne, where she currently lives and works. Hawley’s cultural and geographical experiences play an important role in shaping her aesthetic sense and worldview. Her work is about the integration of shape, form, line and surface (contours, proportions and scale); interior versus exterior spaces; the play of light on metal; and the difference modest changes can make to the look and feel of a piece. She is inspired by the monumentality of simple forms, regardless of scale.
