Make Your Own: Join Hands-On Workshops at MAD

Discover unique techniques and art-making processes and explore programs for artists and art enthusiasts of all ages

The Museum’s February programs include hands-on workshops using fiber, paper, cardboard, clay and other materials to make your own art.

Gallery nights with the curators and art talks introduce outstanding artists and familiarize visitors with the Museum’s current exhibitions and its permanent collection.

Highlights of the Museum’s February programs include:

Think Global, Cut Local: Chinese Paper Cutting for Chinese New Year
In celebration of Chinese New Year, participants of this fun-filled paper cutting workshop will learn traditional Chinese paper cutting techniques part of MAD’s series on cut paper traditions from around the world. Saturday, February 13, 2:30p.m. Free with Museum admission.

Studio Sundays: Process Exposed
Participants of this family oriented workshop will learn about the processes behind making an art piece. Looking at art at the Museum, children and their families will explore materials and methods used to create 3-dimensional art, creating art pieces made out of cardboard. Sunday, February 14, 2010, 2:00-4:00 p.m. $10 per individual, includes admission and all materials.

Slab-building workshop with Greenwich House Pottery
Expert ceramists from Greenwich House Pottery show participants the basic techniques used by famed ceramic sculptor Viola Frey. Each participant will create their own slab-built vessel or sculpture. Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. Admission $50/$45 for members.

Gallery Night with the Curators
Thursday, February 4, 2010, 6:30 p.m.
Free with Thursday evening Pay-What-You-Wish admission
Exhibition Curator Lowery Stokes Sims guides visitors through the new exhibition, Bigger, Better More: The Art of Viola Frey, which features Frey’s colossal clay figures, sculptures, ceramic plates as well as a selection of her paintings and works on paper. Following, Assistant Curator Elizabeth Edwards Kirrane will tour the companion exhibition, California Dreamers.

Studio Sundays: Read my Badge

Using fiber, found objects and ideas inspired by the Museum’s jewelry collection, participants of this hands-on crafts workshop for the entire family, will design and make a badge that says something about them.

Participants of this family workshop will learn about the processes behind creating a work of art. Looking at art from the Museum’s Permanent Collection and its current exhibition, Slash: Paper Under The Knife, participants will explore materials and methods used to create 3-dimensional works of art by creating their own process-driven work made out of cardboard.

After exploring various ways in which artists have created sculptural works of art from the Museum’s featured exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife, participants of this workshop will
design and create their own innovative 3D artwork using the exciting art of slot building and various patterning techniques.

Exploring the Museum’s exhibition Slash: Paper Under the Knife, participants of this art workshop explore artist have used repetition and rhythm in their works. Learning traditional and non-traditional paper-working techniques, participants will make their own paper creation.
