Manager, School and Teacher Programs
(Full-Time / Permanent)
The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) seeks a Manager of School and Teacher Programs to join the Education department and oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of the museum’s school and teacher programs, including onsite MADLab field trips for K-12 students, long-term school partnership programs, and periodic professional development workshops for teachers. This position also manages, trains, and supports the team of part-time museum educators who lead our K-12 field trips.
Our ideal candidate is a hands-on, highly organized, and emotionally intelligent manager with a depth of knowledge of best practices in art education (particularly in museums and other informal learning environments), working knowledge of the NYC school system, strong teaching skillsets, demonstrated managerial experience, and excellent organization and project management skills.
This is a multi-faceted role that blends day-to-day logistics, planning and implementing student and teacher-centered programs, occasional field trip facilitation, and managing a team of part-time educators. Successful candidates will have the ability to manage concurrent projects and balance short-term and long-term priorities, including mission-driven and revenue generating programs. The Manager will collaborate with the Deputy Director of Education to expand the reach of existing programs while ensuring high-quality learning experiences. This role reports to the Deputy Director of Education and works collaboratively with colleagues as an integral part of the Education department team while includes the Manager of Teen and Intergenerational Programs and the Manager of Public Programs and Artist Studios, as well as cross-departmentally throughout the Museum.

COMPENSATION AND SCHEDULE
This is a full-time, exempt position with compensation of $66,300 per annum.
Generally, MAD expects a weekly schedule 9:30am–5:30pm, which includes an unpaid hour for lunch, at a minimum of 35 hours per week. That said, this position requires flexibility as an on-site presence and availability to work occasional weekend and evenings aligned with program schedules.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee all aspects of MAD’s signature K-12 field trip program (MADLab field trips) and school partnership programs serving 4,500 students annually
- Supervise, support, and evaluate a cohort of part-time Artist Educators, including scheduling, leading regular training sessions and peer evaluations, and cultivating community
- Design, plan, and facilitate professional development workshops for NYC teachers (3+ programs annually) and collaborate with the NYC DoE and other school partners on additional contracted workshops
- Coordinate with school administrators and teachers to schedule field trips, ensure program alignment with learning goals and accommodations, and foster relationship-building with schools and teachers
- Oversee long-term school partnership programs
- Serve as a key liaison to the NYC DoE and other school-based organizations
- Thoughtfully and consistently evaluate all school and teacher programs and implement feedback to refine teaching practices and program procedures
- Develop and lead thematic, developmentally appropriate, inquiry-based gallery tours and artmaking lessons for K-12 audiences as needed
- Develop and manage annual budget for school and teacher programs
- Collect and compile program documentation (quantitative and qualitative data, photos, and testimonials) for grant and board reports
- Periodic renewal of city and state level certification and contracts for school and teacher programs
- General day-to day administration (expense reconciliation, supply orders and organization, maintaining order and cleanliness of public-facing classroom space)
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
A successful candidate will meet many of these qualifications and bring the curiosity, adaptability, and willingness to learn the rest on the job.
- Minimum 3 years of experience developing and managing visual arts programming for school and teaches audiences in a museum or art education setting
- Ideally, a minimum 2 years of direct managerial experience
- Experience creating and teaching object-based lessons and art making programs for school-age audiences (K-12) in a museum or art education setting
- Experience developing and managing project and program budgets
- Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with the ability to establish and maintain relationships, and build community
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced, creative, and public-facing environment.
- Proactive communicator with excellent written and communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Exceptional time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines across simultaneous projects, work independently, prioritize tasks, and delegate when appropriate.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to receive and implement feedback in program design
KNOWLEDGE & EDUCATION
- Bachelor's degree expected; graduate work in art education, museum education, or a related field is a plus — but experience is the most important qualification.
- Strong foundation of best practices in art education (particularly in museums and other informal learning environments), strong teaching skillsets in both gallery and artmaking settings
- Knowledge of the NYC school system and local, state, and national learning standards in visual arts
- Interest in and knowledge of contemporary art, craft, and design practices
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, ACME, and/or related software.
