Program Description

A cinematographic profile of Roberto Burle Marx (1909–94), the Brazilian landscape architect, distinguished amateur botanist, and one of Rio de Janeiro’s most famous artists. His use of local South American plants in the design and layout of open spaces is a creative attempt to reconcile two of Brazil’s major problems: to help conserve the rich tropical plant life and to bring places of recreation to the densely populated cities. With contributions by Lucio Costa (the architect of Brasilia), William Howard Adams (curator of Marx’s 1991 exhibition at MoMA), and Dr. Simon Mayo from Kew Gardens.
