For Brooklyn-based metal and glass artist Alexandra Lozier, work begins outside, observing the landscape. She collects and encapsulates specimens from nature in an attempt to preserve the most ephemeral aspects of life and observe our universal mortality. Once removed from their environments, these samples become objects of curiosity—by carrying them with us, we pay homage to the land we evolved from and invite others to do the same. Lozier graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia with a BFA in crafts. She opened her own studio, Touch of Gray, in 2012, where she creates her own work, collaborates with established artists and designers, and provides emerging jewelry artists the necessary tools and equipment to make their work in a creative atmosphere. Lozier is the artist as alchemist—transforming organic material with precious metal and gems.
