Program Description

Visit third generation master urushi artist Gen Saratani in the Artist Studios as he demonstrates the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi.  Kintsugi involves repairing broken pottery using urushi lacquer in a way that embraces the beauty in imperfection. This process is incredibly time intensive and requires patience and skill.  Mr. Saratani is one of the only traditionally trained urushi artist working full-time in the United States, so this program offers a unique and rare opportunity for visitors to watch this traditional technique unfold.  Perfect for visitors of all ages!
