It’s OK to Say Hi: Teachers Bridging Difference

Tue, Dec 4, 2018

How do we get to know our students, their families, and our communities better? Explore the use of art to connect with people across cultures in this interactive workshop based on the new book Teachers Bridging Difference: Exploring Identity with Art, by Marit Dewhurst. Facilitated by the author, workshop attendees will participate in art activities, explore MAD’s exhibitions, and engage in dialogue about how to get to know our neighbors.

Marit Dewhurst is the Director of Art Education and Associate Professor of Art and Museum Education at the City College of New York. She has worked as an arts educator and program coordinator in multiple arts contexts, including community centers, museums, juvenile detention centers, and international development projects. Her research and teaching interests include social justice education, community-based art, youth empowerment, antiracist teaching, and the role of the arts in community development. Building on her work with teen programs in museums, she co-founded and worked closely with the Museum Teen Summit, a youth-led museum advocacy group. In addition to multiple journal articles and book chapters, she is the author of Social Justice Art: A Framework for Activist Art Pedagogy, which highlights how young activist artists make art to affect their communities.
