Inspired by the exhibition Nike: Form Follows Motion, this hands-on workshop invites participants to assemble and paint their own wooden sculptural sneaker vessel. The workshop will be led by artist and educator Honorroller, whose multidisciplinary practice combines sculpture, illustration, and graphic design to explore social constructs, branding, popular culture, and the transition from youth to adulthood. Rendered primarily in wood, Honorroller’s geometric sneaker sculptures recall the low-poly visual language of his favorite video games from the 1990s while also paying homage to the chonky silhouettes of the era’s iconic Nike Air basketball shoes and other influential sneakers brands. 

Using the materials provided, participants will explore color, pattern, and personal symbolism, to transform the familiar form of the sneaker into a one-of-a-kind work of art reflecting their own experiences, identity, and journey. At the workshop’s end, participants will take home their very own sneaker-inspired vase or vessel—a functional and personal work of art to display and enjoy.

About the artist

Honorroller (Christopher Chan) is an artist with a multidisciplinary practice that combines sculpture, illustration, and graphic design to explore social constructs, branding, popular culture, and the transition from youth to adulthood. Often rendered primarily in wood, his geometric sculptures use abstract visual language to depict contemporary fashion and footwear. Chan’s work has been shown at Spring Break Art Fair, A/D/O Store, Art Basel Miami, 180 Franklin, and elsewhere. His public commissions include Nike, Gucci, MTV, Bleacher Report, Complex Media, and others.
