Paper Cutting for the New Year

Sat, Feb 13, 2010

Celebrate the Year of the Tiger with a drop-in hands-on workshop where participants will learn the traditional Chinese paper cutting techniques, part of MAD’s series celebrating cut paper traditions from around the world.

Mother-daughter duo Hongyi He and Ling Tang will assist participants in the creation of traditional window flowers, and the Chinese character for “Spring.” Window flowers are a beautiful motif, requiring multiple folds before cutting a design. Chinese Lunar New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. The tradition of cutting “Spring” characters for Chinese New Year dates back more than a thousand years. All materials will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Hongyi He is a professor at South-Central University for Nationalities (CSCUN) in Wuhan, China with over 28 years of experience in her art form. Her work has been recognized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the China Folk Artists Association. Her daughter Ling Tang is a graduate student at Columbia University and will provide Chinese-English interpretation.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
