MAD Saturday: Family Day

Sat, Oct 16 / 11 am

No reservations required, but space is limited
All materials provided

Family Day offers countless opportunities for children to create, learn, and explore. The MAD’s Galleries, Open Studios, workshops, and theater are the perfect place to spend a day discovering art, meeting artists, watching films—and being creative. Exploring the Museum’s exhibitions Think Again: New Latin American Jewelry and Dead or Alive: Nature Becomes Art, children will discover how artists transform organic materials—feathers, shells, bones, plant materials, and fur—to create intricately crafted and designed installations and sculptures; children will also make jewelry inspired by contemporary jewelry of Latin America.

Artist Educators will assist families in exploring their own creativity while enjoying the artwork at MAD and the views of Central Park.

Come, and be inspired by feature films and animated shorts.  For more information, call 212.299.7780.

Hold the dates for more Family Days in 2011:
January 15th, April 9th and October 8th

Films

El Salon Mexico (12 min)
Director: Paul Glickman
This fantasy animation, set in an old Mexico of the imagination and woven into the musical composition El Salon Mexico by Aaron Copland, spins the story of Antonito, who sneaks out of the house one night along with his burro and rooster to see a fiesta for the very first time. Before the night is over the three friends endure a scary trip through the forest, a found and lost love, a hard look at their poverty, a bully, a scary nightmare, a torrential downpour, a plunge in a raging flood, a dramatic river rescue and at last a warm welcome home.

ART (5 min:36 sec)
Author: Patrick McDonnell/ Illustrator: Patrick McDonnell
Art, a young boy, joyfully draws scribbles that squiggle, splotches with blotches, zigs and zags, doodles and dogs, and so much more! Children are introduced to the imaginative world of art and how a picture really can be worth a thousand words. Narration and music by the versatile Bobby McFerrin. Directed by Konstantin Bronzit. A co-production of Weston Woods Studios, Studio Mir and Rembrandt Films.

I'm In Love with Kimberly Johnson (9 min)
Director: Adam Johns
Andy Franklin is in love with the prettiest girl in school, Kimberly Johnson. Like any 10-year-old boy with a crush, Andy has a plan to win her heart: He’s going to make her stuffed animals. But Andy isn’t your average 10-year-old; he has a special gift that allows him to bring these animals to life! With the help of his friends Jake and Emily, and his magical toys, Andy will try to win her heart and find what love really is.

Roberto the Insect Architect (11 min:35 sec)
Directors: Galen Fott and Jerry Hunt
Roberto isn't like the other termites - he likes to build with wood, not eat it. And so, he sets off for the big city to pursue his dream of becoming an architect.

My Pantanal (10 min)
Director: Andrea Heydlauff
My Pantanal is a film about a boy named Aerenilso, who lives on a ranch in the Pantanal, the world's largest and wildest wetland, in Brazil. Aerenilso shows us what it is like to be a Pantanero (a cowboy) and raise cattle in the incredible landscape that is teeming with wildlife, including the beautiful and mysterious jaguar. Jaguars have typically been hunted by people who are trying to protect their cows, but Aerenilso's ranch is different. He lives on a conservation ranch where the scientists and Pantanero's are working together to show that ranching and jaguars can coexist in this magical place.

Souvenir (5 min:14 sec)
Director: Stephen Rose
A shadowy fable unfolds from inside a souvenir snow globe, in this unique film that was shot entirely with a toy camera.

Film screening made possible by The Brooklyn Film Festival's kidsfilmfest
