Join Aqeel Malcolm in MAD’s Artist Studios to make hair jewelry using various textures of synthetic human hair. Whether kinky, frizzy, nappy, wavy, curly, or straight, hair has a direct connection to the human body and our personal identities. In addition to engaging in conversations about the uses and history of hair and how it relates to their own identities, teens will have the option of learning how to weave with hair using cardboard looms.
Aqeel Malcolm is exploring intersectionality as it relates to the layers of his own identity as a black, queer, African-American, and Jamaican-American male. Craft is essential to his studio practice, especially working with fibers and weaving, as are ideas of intimacy and masculinity. A question that persists in his work is: “What constitutes masculinity and how is it affecting the men of today?”
