Hair as Community

Thu, Feb 19 / 6 pm

The use of the term “salon” as a meeting place of fashionable people dates to sixteenth-century France, where communities would gather to refine themselves through conversations. Since the early 1900s,  “salon” has also come to mean hair salon—a place not only for grooming, but also a communal place for conversation, debate and dialogue.

Exploring this role of the salon, and hair as means of establishing community in today’s NYC, the evening salon Hair as Community brings together informal dialogues with hands-on hairdressing in MAD’s Artist Studios. Throughout the course of the night, join stylists, artists, academics and the public for a dialogue on current use, and future possibilities, for hair salons to serve as community cultural spaces.

Participants Include AK Burns and Katherine Hubbard, Aisha Cousins, Jamala Johns, Nontsikelelo Mutiti and will be moderated by Allison Freedman Weisberg, Executive Director & Founder, Recess.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
