#Ambi and Artists Freelancing to Non-Art Markets

Sat, Oct 19, 2013

Extending from Carson Salter’s thesis research at MIT, #Ambi_ (carsonsalter.com/ambi/) was a series at the school that showcased the growing movement of contemporary artists’ businesses. Positioned between art and commerce, artists’ businesses may, on one hand, use standard profit motives, and send knowledge to commercial markets unrelated to art. On the other hand, artists working in a commercial mode might show work in galleries and identify primarily as artists. In either case, these enterprises establish a language and ontology of liminality: multivalent value propositions, personalized corporate terms, and attitudes of ambivalence. Over the course of this afternoon panel discussion, Salter and guests discuss the use of online platforms for scholarly research and a potential middle ground for artistic and corporate worlds.

Panelists Include
Are.na (Charles Broskoski) http://are.na; K-HOLE (Sean Monahan and Gregory Fong) http://khole.net/RHEI; Research ( David Hilmer Rex) http://rhei.is/
