Unisex Hair

Thu, Feb 26, 2015

From the buzz cut and the weave to the payot and perm, hairstyles are often used to demarcate the gender of the wearer, with “men’s” and “women’s” styles and salons becoming commonplace. But what makes a hairstyle become “for men” or “for women”? How are these norms subverting and evolving into today’s world of global hairstyles?

Exploring this role of gender in contemporary hairstyle creation, the evening salon Unisex Hair brings together informal dialogues with hands-on hairdressing in MAD’s Artist Studios. Throughout the course of the night, join stylists, artists, academics and the public for a dialogue on the creation, deconstruction and emerging possibilities for the formation and expression of gender through hair.

Participants Include Dr. Rosalind Jeffries, Khane Kutzwell and will be moderated by Ryann Holmes, Founder of bklyn boihood and Community Programming Director at Museum of Contemporary African Diaspora and Arts
