Slash: Paper Under the Knife explores the international phenomenon of cut paper in contemporary art—showcasing the work of artists who reach beyond the traditional role of paper as a neutral surface to consider its potential as a medium for provocative, expressive, and visually striking sculpture, installation, and video animation. Featuring work by fifty contemporary artists from sixteen countries, including Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Tom Friedman, Andrea Dezsö, Judy Pfaff, and Kara Walker.

Reservations are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is limited.

Seminar: 10:00 am  - 11:00 am
Andrea Dezsö’s installation is comprised of thirty tunnel books each presenting a scene composed of archetypal characters engaged in mysterious and symbolic activities. Tunnel books are Victorian pop-up books which showcase layered 3-dimensional scenes in a collapsible case. Ms. Dezsö will begin the morning seminar discussing her studio practice, influences, and showing her work, followed by Q & A.

Workshops begin promptly at 1p.m.


Afternoon Workshop: 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm
The tunnel format is particularly suited for creating a stage-like setting, exploring dreams and memory. Andrea Dezsö will conduct the afternoon workshop and participants will build a four-layered, hand cut, and assembled tunnel book. Educators will explore how this workshop can be translated for use in the classroom. Come socialize, and network with other educators while overlooking beautiful Central Park, and Columbus Circle, tour the exhibition, and learn about our online resources for teachers.

Please review our health and safety protocols before you arrive. MAD strongly recommends all visitors six months and older are vaccinated against Covid-19 and visitors ages two and up wear face coverings, even if vaccinated. Thank you for your cooperation.
