This May 9-20, MAD will once again participate in NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official annual citywide celebration of design. In its second year, NYCxDESIGN serves as a festival showcasing New York City’s diverse design community and highlighting its contributions to the fabric and economy of the five boroughs. NYCxDESIGN will feature hundreds of events across New York City with partners that include AIGA, BKLYN DESIGNS, Cooper-Hewitt, Collective 2 Design Fair, FIT, Frieze New York, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), and WantedDesign in addition to MAD, as well as NYC&Co, New York City Council; NYC Department of Cultural Affairs; NYC Department of Design and Construction; NYC Department of Parks & Recreation; NYC Department of Transportation; and NYC Economic Development Corporation. 

MAD will present and participate in a range of programs, on site and throughout the city:

Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital

Visit Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital, an exhibition exploring the many areas of 21st-century creativity made possible by digital fabrication. Out of Hand is the first major museum exhibition to examine this interdisciplinary trend through the pioneering works of more than 80 international artists, architects, and designers, with works ranging from sculpture and furniture to fashion and transport.

MAD celebrates the fifth anniversary of its move to 2 Columbus Circle with the exhibition Re: Collection. The exhibition will survey Chief Curator Emeritus David McFadden's sixteen years at MAD through objects acquired during his tenure. Featured artists include Judy Chicago, Kim Schmahmann, James Turrell and Sebastian Brajkovic, among many others.

Multiple Exposures: Jewelry and Photography

The first museum exhibition to explore how contemporary jewelry artists transform and add new meaning to the pervasive images of this digital age, Multiple Exposures features more than 80 artists from over 20 countries, including Gijs Bakker, Wafaa Bilal, Jiro Kamata, Otto Künzli, Kara Ross, Bettina Speckner, Joyce J. Scott, Kiff Slemmons, and Andy Warhol, among others.

Attend EXPOSED: Contemporary Jewelers and the Photograph, a panel discussion exploring how photographs have been integrated into jewelry as tokens of memory, devotion, or mourning. MAD’s Director, Glenn Adamson, will lead a designer talk on Saturday, May 10 at 1pm focusing on the ongoing influence of Scandinavian design as part of Collective Conversations, an intimate series of discussions centered around design and the creative process. The series will be held at Collective 2 in a custom-built area by BroLab, a multidisciplinary practice that bridges art and design principles.

Jake Yuzna, Director of Public Programs, will participate in PULSE Perspectives, a series of daily roundtable discussions that explore ideas within the contemporary art and the art market. Yuzna will co-lead an intimate conversation on curating with Kyle DeWoody, Co-Founder and Creative Director of Grey Area.
